Warren Buffett Stocks: What’s in Berkshire Hathaway’s Portfolio?

You need to keep track of Warren Buffett’s stock because while the Berkshire Hathaway (BRKB) chief sticks to a winning investment formula, which does not mean sitting still.

In the third quarter of 2022, the traditionally tech-averse Buffett opened a significant stake in Taiwan semiconductor (TSM). Taiwan Semi, also known as TSMC, is the world’s largest contract chip maker. It is an important chip supplier for Apple (AAPL), the No. 1 position in Berkshire’s Dow stock-heavy portfolio by market value and the No. 2 position by number of shares.

Buffett’s Berkshire also picked up Louisiana Pacific Ocean (LPX), a manufacturer of engineered wood construction products and components Jefferies Financial Group (JEF), a global investment banking and capital markets company, both for the first time.

In the third quarter, Berkshire strengthened its significant position in Paramount Global (PARA) by 16%. The streaming service Paramount+ is a small but growing rival to Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video.

The conglomerate added to existing positions in Western petroleum (OXY) and Chevron (CVX), according to Berkshire’s latest quarterly 13F filing, published Nov. 14. The company has steadily increased its energy commitment this year, including in the third quarter.

Energy supplies soared and oil prices skyrocketed following the February 24 Russian invasion of Ukraine, which disrupted global oil and gas supplies. Several top energy stocks can be found on the IBD 50 list of top growth stocks and on the IBD Leaderboard.

In the third quarter, Berkshire held many of its largest and longest holdings steady. In addition to Apple, these include bank of America (BAC) and Kraft Heinz (KHC), as well Coca-Cola (KO) and American Express (AXP).

For example, Buffett has held AAPL shares since Q1 2016 and KO shares since Q1 2001.

The Berkshire chief has earned a reputation as a buy-and-hold investor, having owned stock for years, if not decades. After news of the Taiwan semi-purchase of Berkshire broke on Nov. 14, one analyst said TSM stocks “are of the highest quality and define the ‘long term buy and hold’.”

Berkshire Hathaway investment strategy

Buffett is known as a buy-and-hold investor, holding onto stocks for years and even decades. But lately there has been a big turnover.

In 2022, Berkshire Hathaway was dumped AbbVie (ABBV), Bristol Myers Squibb (BMY) and Royalty Pharma (RPRX), not long after I first bought them. The conglomerate exited in 2021 biogen (BIIB), Merck (MRK), Teva Pharmaceuticals (TEVA) and Merck spin-off Organon (OGN), also not long after opening stakes in those drug stocks.
