Valerie Bertinelli says she’s “happy.” to possibly “spend the rest of my life alone” after a second divorce

Speaking to USA TODAY in January, the “Valerie’s Home Cooking” star got candid about her relationship with Van Halen and the troubles that plagued her second marriage to Vitale, which are documented in her memoir “Enough Al: Learning to Love the Way I Am Today.”

Bertinelli began writing the book just weeks after Van Halen died on October 6, 2020, after a long battle with cancer.

Although the actress wrote extensively about her first marriage, there are few stories about her second husband, Vitale.

“I tried to be very sensitive to Tom and (Van Halen’s wife until his death, Janie Liszewski) because they are private individuals and I don’t want to tell their story,” Bertinelli said. “I was just trying to tell the story between me and Ed without being hurtful.”

She described the decision to part ways with Vitale in “Enough already” as “a slow, painful decision. But we’ve drifted away from the interests that made us a couple and found that those differences can’t be resolved. He’s a good man who goes through many of the same issues I’ve faced: what can he do to give meaning and purpose to his life? where can he find joy? what is he passionate about? what has he learned? and what is he doing? did he move forward differently? The paths we thought we were on changed.”

Bertinelli added that the divorce “has nothing to do with Ed” and that her marital problems started five years ago.

“I only want the best for him, but I think I have to be alone,” she told USA TODAY. “I don’t know what’s going to happen, but right now I just need to be alone.”
