At the age of 25, Lori Harvey has mastered the art of mystery and is quickly rising as one of the internet’s most popular “It” girls.

But in an interview with Essencethe January/February cover star shared how that same elusiveness has made her subject to endless speculation and groundless discussion, exposing the double-edged sword of mysticism.

“Because I’ve been so quiet all along, the internet has created stories for me,” she said.

Harvey is no stranger to causing a stir in her personal life. This is largely due to her dating history, which includes Hollywood heartthrob Michael B. Jordan. Most recently she has been linked to Snowfall star Damson Idris.

But it’s not just the remarkable faces Harvey is associated with that make her one of Twitter’s favorite topics. Her knack for staying silent even when she’s trending has made her irresistible to fans and critics alike.

“People just take whatever gossip and rumors they have, and then create that as truth. In reality, it’s usually so far from the truth that it can be difficult,” Harvey said.

But as daughter of The original Kings of Comedy Legend Steve Harvey and fashionista Majorie Harvey, she has no shortage of self-affirming advice and shares a mantra from her mother that helps her keep the noise down.

“For those who know and love you, no answer is needed. But for those who don’t, no answer is enough,” Harvey said. “That’s where the strong sense of self comes into play. Just understanding and really knowing who I am, and not letting the outside opinions or noise affect me internally.”

While rumors of her romantic happenings may be of interest to the general public, Harvey proudly enters her “selfish” era. And who she dates, loves, or leaves with is the least interesting thing about her.

“I feel like it was always about being attached to something or someone,” she said. “This time it’s about me. Self-love, self-care, self-reflection. I’m a little selfish right now. It’s my time.”

Yet Harvey cannot ignore the never-ending stream of opinions about some of the most intimate aspects of her life, knowing that it does affect her.

“It can be hard sometimes, especially because I’m a super private person,” she said.

But when it comes to criticizing her choice of men and the length of her relationships, Harvey doesn’t really care.

“I often think people are projecting,” she said, pointing out that a lot of people are just not used to seeing a woman dating on her own terms. “Usually I’ve found that if it’s guys who feel that way, it’s because they know they can’t live up to your standards. And that’s okay too. Not everything is for everyone.”

Now just shy of 26, Harvey has spent most of her adult life in the public eye, an admittedly difficult feat. And while she’s often touted as an “icon” of 21st century dating for young black women, she claims she’s just a 20-year-old learning.

“What I’d like people to know is that I’m a young woman just trying to figure it out — but I’m trying to figure it out in the public eye,” Harvey said. “That magnifies everything. It magnifies your mistakes. It magnifies the ups and downs of just navigating your life and figuring it out on your own.”

She also made it clear that while she will always put herself first, she does not look down on others.

“It’s not about being arrogant or feeling like I’m too good or too this or too that. I know my worth, and I know my worth. I’m not going to compromise or settle for that with less than what I know I deserve,” she said.

Ensuring self-love precedes any external validators is the current practice of the founder of SKN by LH, and she advises others to adopt a similar mantra.

“Put yourself first. Love yourself. Put yourself on the highest pedestal and never come down,” she said.
