Jana Kramer talks about her decision to go off anxiety medication.
On Monday’s episode of her Whine down podcast, the singer, 39, revealed she has been off medication for over a month after being on one prescription or another for the past 18 years.
“I’m officially a month and a week free from anxiety meds,” she said. “I haven’t had an anxiety attack yet.”
Kramer, who shares daughter Jolie, 6, and son Jace, 4, with ex-husband Mike Caussin, explained that she had made the decision to “tapere down” from Lexapro – a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used to treat anxiety. and treat depression – after she gave birth to her firstborn.
Despite her efforts to come off the medication, Kramer said she still had panic attacks and anxiety attacks that kept her from going all out. Then, after divorcing her ex-husband Mike Caussin in April 2021, the panic attacks stopped altogether.
“After my divorce, I didn’t have a panic attack,” she said. “It’s like letting go of the negative or the past triggers or something that reminds you. That was still in my body.”
The discovery led her to talk to her doctor about the possibility of coming off her medications completely.
“To be honest, Doctor, I haven’t had an anxiety attack since I got divorced,” said the Good fight co-author recalled telling her doctor. “In my mind I thought, ‘Can I [go off completely]? Like how? Will it be okay?’”
Her concerns were positively reassured by her doctor: “‘You may have to move on in a month or so, and that’s okay,'” she recalls the doctor staying. “‘Don’t beat yourself up.'”
Kramer has opened up in the past about how the tumultuous marriage to Caussin caused her mental anguish.
In an October episode of Facebook Watch’s Red Table Talk, Kramer revealed that she “destroyed” Caussin’s belongings – including an expensive tuxedo and multiple Xboxes – after discovering he was cheating on her with more than 13 women.
“I shattered so many things in my house,” she said. “There was a door to the pantry… so my girlfriends and I went for it… I destroyed all his Xboxes and all those things he said were his only vice. I wrote all over his tuxedo. I became really crazy for a minute.”
Kramer, who is currently single but continues to co-parent her little ones with Caussin, told Yahoo Life in November that her biggest dreams these days are to find peace in her life.
“I know that to be a good mom, a good partner — hopefully one day — and a good boss, I have to take care of myself and also stand up for myself,” she explains. “I think we’re always showing up for other people that we forget about ourselves. Giving yourself that peace and that grace and that investment goes a long way.”
