Emily Blunt didn’t drag Tom Cruise along.

The British actress, who appeared alongside Cruise in 2014 edge of tomorrow, clarifies a story she recently told on the podcast Slimless about the action star who told her to “stop being such an ap****” on the set of the sci-fi action movie. She said the story, which she told because she thought it was funny, was “literally and absurdly taken out of context.”

“It’s ridiculous that it’s being passed around as something that offended me,” Blunt said in a statement to E! News. ‘That didn’t happen. I shared the story as flippantly as it was intended by Tom.”

She went on to call Cruise “a dear friend” whom she adores and said he was “a gem to me” when they worked together. As for calling her “ap****,” “It was said as a joke to make me laugh, which it did in a big way. And it’s still something we do to this day.” laugh today.”

Blunt appeared on December 12 smart, co-hosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, and talked about making the movie — and the 85-pound “massive robot suit” she wore for the part. The devil wears Prada actress said she cried when she tried on the exo suit for the first time. While she trained extensively prior to filming the role, using weights, sprints, gymnastics and Israeli martial arts, she feared she wouldn’t be able to move – or act – in it.

“It was so heavy that the first time I put it on I started crying – in front of Tom,” Emily said. “And he didn’t know what to do. He just stared at me and said, ‘I know. I know. I know.’ I was like, Tom, I’m not sure how I’m going to get through this shoot” and I started crying. “I’m just feeling a little panic about the whole shoot.” And he literally stared at me for a long time, not knowing what to do, and he said, ‘Come on, stop being such an ap****, okay?'”

The podcast’s co-hosts laughed at her recollection, saying, “Good for Tom,” Blunt said, “And I laughed — and then we got through it,” as she got used to working in the suit. She called Cruise “brilliant”. in the movie.

Blunt also revealed in the conversation that she suffered an injury on set while doing an aerial stunt on cables that went wrong. She hurt her ribs and collarbone – injuries that continue to this day. (At the time, Weekly entertainment reported that she nearly broke her nose, with a doctor on set sticking up two fingers to help the cartilage fall back into place, as well as dislocating her thumb and popping two ribs.)

There is talk of one Edge of tomorrow sequel, but Blunt, who has said she read a “great script” for the project, didn’t seem hopeful last year.

“Honestly, I think the movie is too expensive,” she told Howard Stern in 2021. “Yeah, I don’t know how we’re going to do it. I think it’s hard to coordinate everyone’s schedules. I would love it. [Director] Doug Liman would love it. Tom would love it. We’d all love to do it, but I think until we figure out what’s going on with the industry, I honestly think we need to figure out what the next roadmap is for the kind of movies people want to make.”
