Costco’s products are some of the most talked about grocery items on the internet. For example, remember the signature Cauliflower Crust Pizza that took Reddit by storm? Or the Super Premium Vanilla Ice Cream folks who were gushing?
Then there are items that stand out purely because they are. . . intriguingly weird. And Zappala’s Baked Chocolate Chip Ricotta, making circles on social media again, is one of them. The cheese has caught the attention of shoppers because it contains an ingredient few would expect to find in a cheese: chocolate.
On Dec. 18, Instagram user @costcobuys announced that the food mashup is now available again in the warehouse, writing: “This cheese is versatile and delicious… chocolate ricotta pancakes anyone?!” And boy, did people have anything to say.

The $13.89-per-pound ricotta, imported into Italy, is described as a “creamy, chocolate-flavored dessert cheese,” with the packaging stating that the product “pairs well with prosecco.” Okay, so the cheese is actually labeled dessert, which explains the chocolate, but it sure makes most of us do a double take.
“Looks absolutely delicious,” commented one Instagram user. Meanwhile, a handful of people weren’t too thrilled with the item. One person wrote: “No! Just NO!”, while another commented: “This is peak America – how can they do this to Ricotta?”
However, in response to the individuals expressing distaste for the sweet cheese, several people compared the product to Italian cannoli filling.
“Lmao, what do you all think is in a cannoli?? 🤣,” one person wrote. “I can see from some of the comments that many of you have never had a cannolo,” said another.
This isn’t the first time Costco’s Baked Chocolate Chip Ricotta has sparked an online conversation. In January, a Reddit user posted a photo of the product, which led to several people cringing over the cheese and sharing how they plan on enjoying it: paired with cannoli chips, graham crackers, biscotti, vanilla wafers, and even vanilla Oreos .
However, Costco’s chocolate chip cheese isn’t the only sweet treat to turn heads. Last week, @costcobuys announced that the warehouse club’s Christmas Tuxedo Chocolate Mousse Cake is back. The layered dessert consists of chocolate cake, chocolate mousse, white chocolate mousse and pieces of brownie, glazed with chocolate ganache and a red “Merry Christmas” written across the top.
