This is the season to treat yourself, but unfortunately all these festive and incredibly tasty treats can also make it much harder to stick to your usual exercise and diet routine. “During the holidays, it’s harder to eat healthy and exercise because of all the travel, events, parties and more. Keeping track of your water intake is the name of the game here. Plus, research says drinking more water can aid in your weight loss efforts. So do yourself a favor and make sure you stay hydrated.
According to Yeung, “Staying hydrated is one of the easiest things you can do for your health and fitness, especially if you’re traveling during the holidays. Drink enough water so that your urine is light yellow.” If you need some hydration motivation, consider opting for a smart water bottle that reminds you to take your sips.
Get some exercise every day.
If you feel like you don’t have extra time to work out or jog on the treadmill, tell yourself that your body and mind will thank you if you do. Something as simple as a short 10 minute walk outside is better than chilling on the couch all day. Yeung recommends riding a bike, walking your pup, jumping rope, or doing a little dance in your living room. The most important thing is to get your body moving.
Stick to healthy foods 80% of the time.
Yeung recommends filling your plate with plenty of lean meats, fresh vegetables, and whole carbohydrates for most meals. This is essential to provide your body with the important nutrients it needs to function properly. “That way you can occasionally spend debt-free,” says Yeung.

Get enough sleep.
In addition to diet and exercise, sleep is an important part of your overall fitness and well-being. According to National Sleep Foundation guidelines, adults should get seven to nine hours of solid sleep each night. Individuals age 65 and older should get seven to eight hours of Zs.
Keep the long term in mind.
As we said at the beginning, this is the season to treat yourself. That means you don’t have to feel guilty about enjoying a big holiday meal or opting for an extra gingerbread cookie. “Fitness is a lifelong pursuit,” Yeung explains. “Go straight back to your normal routine after the holidays and you won’t have to stress.”
